Boston Ironsides Rugby Football Club is an inclusive, senior amateur Rugby Union team who welcomes members of all backgrounds regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, race, religion, age, or physical ability. Founded on July 28, 2002, BIRFC is based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) Division 4 Men's competition. The Ironsides represent Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire as New England's only competitive and fully accredited member of the International Gay Rugby Association and Board (IGRAB).
IGRAB is responsible for organizing the biennial Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament-the Rugby World Cup for gay and gay-friendly teams. In May 2006 the BIRFC were winners of the cup which is named for Mark Bingham, an openly gay rugby player, and one of the heroes who, on September 11, 2001, lost their lives in an attempt to prevent the hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93.
