William Gilbert (1799-1877) was the boot and shoe maker to Rugby School. By 1823, Gilbert was already supplying balls to Rugby School when William Webb Ellis first picked up and ran with the ball and the game of Rugby Football began. Soon thereafter, Gilbert's business grew as the sport's popularity spread.

Gilbert may be known for its rugby balls, but today also sells Team Wear and currently sponsor a number of teams globally, including the Newport Gwent Dragons, as well as some of the games fastest emerging nations.
