| Georgia Republic National Team Club Information
Nicknamed the Lelos, the Georgia Republic National Team has improved in recent years as the game sweeps the small republic.
Georgia formed its own Rugby Union in 1964 despite being a member of the Soviet Union. The Lelos immediately decided to host a tour by Zimbabwe, a tour in which Georgia won two of the three tests. A developing rugby nation, Georgia struggled to get matches until it was admitted to the International Rugby Board in 1992.
Upon membership to the IRB, Georgia made an impact in Sevens rugby, but it wasn’t until 1999 that the Lelos became a force in the 15’s.
After failing to qualify for the World Cup, Georgia won the European Nations Cup in 2001-02. In 2003 riding a wave of persistence, the tiny Georgia Republic qualified for its first World Cup. Though the World Cup result wasn’t ideal (0-4), the Lelos have made the international rugby scene, and the world is taking them seriously.
