Buyer's Guide-Shoulder Pads

Rugby Player's Buying Guide

Shoulder Pads

(example)

Shoulder pads come in a variety of styles and sizes depending on how much padding you desire. Many are shorter and cover only the shoulders and collarbone to allow for protection with a lot of breathability. Others are much longer and provide padding for most of the torso and upper arm but hold in more heat. The IRB requires that padding be soft and no more than 1 centimeter thick when uncompressed. While this isn’t anything near the scale of American Football pads, rugby shoulder pads do take a good bit of the edge off of a lot of tackles and scrums, though proper technique is still a must to prevent injury.
