     Headgear is often referred to as a scrum cap. A scrum cap is a padded helmet-like item which covers the ears and head with straps underneath the chin. This is a very effective item for reducing head and ear abrasions (particularly useful for tight five players). While it is an optional piece of equipment, it is highly recommended for pack players and anyone that makes a lot of hard tackles and contact.
